![]() ![]() New theatres look shiny and fancy, but I learned more in the theater that had 6 major renovations. (I might be a bit opinionated on this last one) I am not saying that grad programs are bad**,** but you need to ask the undergrad students what they think of the grad program. ![]() I would recommend talking to the students. Half of them were complete assholes or only went to grad school because they realized they could not make it in the real world post-bachelors degree. ![]() When I was in undergrad me and other undergraduates had a bit of resentment towards the grad students because they got all of the good projects. You can do both, but not all schools offer both types of programs.įind out if the school has a masters program! How do graduate students affect undergraduate students? Generally, you will have to take a few intro classes that will be taught by graduate students, this can cause problems because they might be more experienced, but they are students too. Do not go to a design school and expect to be super educated in technology. Do not expect to go to a technology school and get to design a bunch of shows. Some schools offer both, if you take a tour, ask about the difference between the programs.ĭo you want to be a designer? Do you want to be a technician? some schools only really offer one or the other, make sure you understand the difference. Know the difference, generally, a BFA is considered a harder to get and more specialized degree path than a BA. Small schools also might have a larger budget than you think, my community college had a significantly better gear inventory than my university. This might seem overwhelming, but it's important to know how to do everything at least a little. You will also learn how to be a "man with many hats" This means you might be the ME, LD, ALD, and the programmer. You should not discount a smaller school, the great thing about going to a smaller school is that you build a more personal relationship with the staff and instructors. I have seen in a few universities that the staff actually do most of the productions work, and the students. Larger student bodies can make getting the task or the job you want much harder, as you have more people to compete against for the roles and positions you want. This means you have to maintain a large student population to validate the large budget. Larger schools can be beneficial for a few reasons, the big one is BUDGET, schools with a bigger budget generally mean you get diversity in the staff and professors, and larger more high tech productions. Who will you meet, and what companies will you be able to associate with? So I will give you some advice from a semi-recent and successful graduate.Ģ things are very important when it comes to making a choice on which educational institution I will give you an answer, but I will not tell you what school I think is best, because what you think is the best vs what I think is the best may be very different, as we probably have different aspirations.
